4- Tanya Khan

These pieces are created by the Ghanaian artist El Anatsui. I first came across his work in the Centre Pompidou and was drawn to how he uses metal objects to create something that looks so soft and fluid. He uses an assortment of bottle caps, twist-ties, metal foil from bottle necks, and other discarded materials to create these cloth-like installations. Some of his work comment on the struggle of African nations under poverty and corruption and prevalence of crime and disease.

In an interview in 2003, he says:

"I believe that artists are better off working with whatever their environment throws up. I think that's what has been happening in Africa for a long time."

"I believe that color is inherent in everything, and it's possible to get color from around you, and that you're better off picking something which relates to your circumstances and your environment than going to buy a ready-made color."
