1-Kia Mosenthal-What is art?

I think that the question "What is art?" has pervaded throughout the centuries because there is no concrete definition or established guidelines against which a piece of art can be evaluated. This is due, in my opinion, to the subjectivity of art. Art is constantly evolving (from realism to impressionism to cubism etc.) and, as a result, society's perspective on what art is also changes. With this said, I will offer a definition of art, but I realize that art never has been, nor ever will be defined in a way that receives universal consensus. Art is a form of expression. Art is the creation of a piece (whether of music, literature, visual elements, etc.) that triggers some sort of sensual response. This is not to say that art is always aesthetically pleasing, art may very well provoke emotions of grief, pain, or sadness. For example, I have added Picasso's Guernica, which reminds the audience of the tragedies associated with the Spanish Civil War. Art is characterized, in varying degrees, by a relationship between the creator and the observer. Some create art for the sole purpose of self-expression, whereas others create art with the intention of audience approval. Art is an outward representation of a person's thoughts, emotions, and observations.
