1- Emily Lau - What is Art?

What is art?

Art, to me, is what we live for and maybe even, what defines our humanity. Everyday, we are surrounded by beauty, everyday, we experience love, sorrow, hatred, angst...I think that art is about the sharing of all of these experiences. Sometimes, art is about sharing experiences to others: people we know, people we don't know, loved ones, strangers. We are trying to say something or to tell others how we feel, what we see, and ask them to revel in that experience with us. Often, however, I believe that art is about sharing those experiences with oneself: through art, we reflect on our thoughts, our feelings, our aspirations, our dreams.

Above all, I think that art - be it literature, music, painting, sculpture, science, nature - is a unique quality of our humanity. Because we are not alone, because we live in communities and families, we are able to share the experiences of life with each other. Indeed, I believe it is this sharing of experiences that we are able to endure many of life's greatest challenges and to celebrate life's many gifts. Art, I believe, is about the sharing of our humanity.
