11 - ylan: tibetan sand mandalas

These pieces of art are made my Tibetan monks by pouring colored sand in circular patterns. They are often very intricate, complex, and take weeks or months to complete, but are always destroyed after they are finished. It is fascinating to me that this art is all about the creation of the art. The materials are minimal, but the monks meditate intently while they work not thinking about the final product and just about what they are doing. Furthermore, because the sand is loose, the artwork cannot be preserved and is usually either scattered into the wind or the patterns are defaced and scrambled, mixing the colors and symbolizing the buddhist principles of interbeing, impermanence, and non-attachment.
